Summary:
Urban organic waste is nutrient rich and the quality of the waste has improved in the past decades. The option of recycling these nutrients back to rural areas was investigated in a recently established (2003) waste fertilizer field trial (CRUCIAL). The soil received annually amendments of contemporary urban waste-based and reference fertilizers, using normal and accelerated amendment levels; in total 11 different treatments. General soil quality parameters, the microbial community and prevalence of antibiotic resistance were investigated. The opportunity of improving the waste fertilizers as a product by adding chitin to compost was also investigated.
