Visa and Residence Permits

Vor Frue Plads in Copenhagen.

The visa rules depend on your destination and how long you intend to stay in the country of your choice:

Nordic region

If you are a citizen in a Nordic country and travel to another Nordic country for more than 6 months:

  • You do not need visa or a residence permit.
  • You must take a set of “Internordiske Flyttepapirer” (Internordic relocation certificate) with you. This will be issued to you by the National Registration Office in your municipality of residence when you report your move. The certificate must be sent/submitted to the local authorities in the country to which you are travelling.

EU and EEA countries

If you are a citizen in an EU member state and travel to another EU member state:

  • You do not need visa.
  • You must apply for a residence permit if you stay for more than 3 months.
  • You do not have to apply for a residence permit in advance, but can in most cases apply once you are there.
  • You must bring documentation that you are financially independent during your stay, such documentation being in the form of, e.g. a letter confirming that you will be receiving a Danish state education grant.

Overseas

If you travel to countries outside the Nordic region and the EU:

  • You must generally apply for a visa – check the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. (Drop down list in right column with link to rules for Danish citizens)
  • Apply in good time – Getting a visa is often a time-consuming process.
  • By means of a banker’s guarantee in respect of your own or your parents’ accounts, you must be able to document that you are able to pay your own way during your stay. The letter notifying you that you will be receiving a Danish state education grant is not sufficient.
  • Please note that your visa will often only become valid a couple of weeks prior to the expected start of term, and take account of this when planning your travel.
